This is Michel Hazanavicius’ first animated film
Plot
During the war, a poor lumberjack and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, which brings an irreversible change to the couple’s life, and to the lives of those whose paths the child will cross.
So far, this is the best 2024 release I’ve seen this year, and we’re in mid-December 2024
It tells a story that takes place in Poland during World War II, almost like a popular fairy tale. Most of the plot takes place in the forest typical of said popular fairy tales, when a couple of lumberjacks turn up to adopt a Jewish little girl who was thrown off a deportation train that passed through their forest.
From a technical point of view, everything is done perfectly
Her father threw her off to save her from certain death in Auschwitz. I won’t go into the details of the plot so you can see them for yourself, I just want to add that the film reaches a deeply philosophical conclusion.
The visuals of the film are excellent
The drawing style is just right, not too detailed and not too harsh, mostly showing scenes in low light with dominant shades of gray, thus highlighting the horrors of the most infamous war and mass destruction in the history of humanity. And then there is the soundtrack, which is sublime: The musical score, the sound effects, the narration and the dubbing (I saw the original version in French), are fully capable of presenting a gem of a film.
In conclusion, this is one of the best films that deals with the subject of racism and especially the Shoah through its artistic approach and the story it wants to tell
